Theatre Royal’s Birthday Blaze - Grey Street, Newcastle. Saturday and Sunday 6pm-9pm. Free.
As the ‘grand old lady of Grey Street’ turns 175, staff at the Theatre Royal have planned a weekend of festivities which will spill out onto the street. The outdoor show features a mysterious compere by the name of Master of Mischief, who will lead flames and fireworks; phantoms of fiction and other familiar characters from the theatre’s history. This dazzling masquerade also includes birthday cake, and will be complimented on Sunday by a special Gala show, featuring stars of the stage such as Denise Welch and Tim Healy, The Krankies and Christopher Biggins.

He finds himself in the middle of a terrifying haunting, amongst the spooky surroundings of the marshes.
Art
Drawing Inspiration - The BALTIC, Gateshead. Saturday and Sunday. Free Admission.

Based around the inspirational goals of the athletes taking part in the London Olympic Games 2012, participants will get the chance to explore creative techniques and make their own designs. Those works of art will then be collated to produce a huge banner to be displayed between BALTIC and The Sage, top mark the tenth anniversary of the gallery.
Music
Beth Jeans Houghton and the Hooves of Destiny - Westgarth Social Club, Middlesbrough. Sunday February 19. 7.30pm. Tickets: £9
Newcastle’s Beth Jeans Houghton has had her fair share of hype thrust upon her over the last few years. This year finally saw the release of her debut album, ‘Yours Truly, Cellophane Nose’ which encapsulates her mix of off-the-wall pop and dulcet folk. Hotly tipped by the likes of 6 Music’s Marc Riley, and having shared stages with the likes of Imogen Heap and St Vincent; this is certainly a gig for fans of contemporary folk and outsider pop.
