Onyx secure key public sector contract

A North East IT expert is celebrating after it was awarded with a coveted contract to provide cloud computing services to the UK public sector.

The Onyx Group has been named as an official supplier to CloudsStore, where public sector organisations can purchase pre-procured cloud services online.

As their first public sector contract, the move marks a key milestone for Onyx, and CEO Neil Stephenson now hopes that this will allow the Group to expand its public sectir IT services business.

Commenting on the contract, Neil said: “The creation of the G-Cloud and the online app store is a step-change in public sector IT.

“It gives the chance for smaller IT firms to host their products on the network, which also creates the possibility of Government using more software from SME suppliers. Critically, the G-Cloud means SME IT providers will be able to break into the public sector market for the first time.”

CloudStore is the first part of a £60 million G-Cloud framework, which will enable the government to save up to £3.2 billion annually.

It will also provide increased reliability and better consistency, as well as facilitating a move away from traditional procurement processes which favour large corporate businesses over to SMEs.

Onyx will now use their expertise to help implement the Cloud-based solutions in a number of public sector organisations.

Neil added: “The set up of the CloudStore and the way in which it has been developed means that public sector procurement should be far simpler, more flexible and easier for SMEs such as ourselves to win contracts.

“It’s great news for the UK SME market, which drives the UK economy, and also Onyx as we look to expand our position and reputation as a leading supplier of Cloud in the public sector market.”
