Kielder Art & Architecture - Northumberland. Open all weekend. Free admission.
Why not take a day out to explore the Kielder art and achitecture. With a host of trails and walks to choose from, and guides to help find art along the way, this makes for a fun family activity. Starting points are at Kielder Castle Visitor Centre, Leaplish Waterside Park and Hawkhope car park. Artists Heather and Ivan Morison are working on a high level walkway structure, based on old American wooden rollercoasters and trestle bridges, while Leeds-based artist Charles Quick has been working closely with Mosedale Gillatt Architects on creative experiences for visitors.
Cinema
Corancho - Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle. Saturday March 10. 12.25pm. Tickets: £6.95; £4.80 conc.
This noir thriller is said to blend early Scorsese and the Coen Brothers to create a cool and compelling crime drama. Ricardo Darin stars and Pablo Trapero directs in the story of an ambulance chasing lawyer Sosa, who turns up at car accidents, encouraging people to sue. He falls passionately for hospital doctor Lujan, in a stark contrast to his gangland dealings.
Theatre
The King’s Speech - Theatre Royal, Newcastle. All weekend, evenings 7.30pm, matinees 2.30pm. Tickets: £9-£30.
The King’s Speech is set to arrive in Newcastle, for its only Northern date. Penned as a play, before becoming a film, the story is of how King George VI conquered his debilitating stammer with the help of maverick speech therapist Lionel Logue. Charles Edwards, who recently appeared at Shakespeare’s Globe in Much Ado About Nothing, will play George VI.
Exhibitions
Mirror Neurons - National Glass Centre, Sunderland. All weekend.
A glass brain and spinal column which pulsates electromagnetic light and reacts to human contact is part of this fascinating new exhibition. “I was scared to death/I could have died of joy” was created by Canadian media artist Catherine Richards and is part of this year’s AV festival, exploring ideas of scientific experimentation, media processing and time delay.
Music
Styles Make Fights - The Cluny 2, Ouseburn. Friday March 9. Tickets: £4
A special showcase gig for lively independent North East label Tiny Lights, presents Newcastle power-pop act Styles Make Fights, known for punchy, unpretentious songs. Abrasive guitars and crafty hooks make this four piece one for fans of back to basics bands.
