Angel spreads the recycling message
A PARTNERSHIP with a recycling service is helping a landmark hotel achieve its aim of zero waste to landfill.
When The Angel View Inn in Gateshead reviewed its recycling rates last year, it knew more could be done to reduce its carbon footprint.
The premises – which overlooks The Angel of the North – has now teamed up with J & B Recycling to manage all of its waste with weekly collections of glass, cans, paper, plastics, cardboard and general waste.
Sanjay Chopra, general manager of the Angel View Inn, said: “Being in such an iconic position means we have customers visiting from right across the country. It’s important for us to be a responsible business whether that is providing an excellent experience or being environmentally friendly.
“We contacted J & B because we had heard about their service with other pubs and restaurants and they were able to carry out a full waste audit. That not only identified cost savings compared to our existing service, it meant we are now able to say that nothing from our hotel goes to landfill.
“We have a lot of glass bottles, plastics and cans and in a time of recession it feels good to know we have saved money, as well as knowing the Angel View is doing its best to help the environment.”
J & B collects all of the hotel’s glass and cans, bales of cardboard and other materials, such as paper, plastic bottles and polythene for recycling. The remaining general waste is also processed and recovered without sending to landfill.
J & B recycles approximately 100,000 tonnes of waste each year from household, commercial, industrial and construction sources across the North East. This includes waste material from a range of businesses in Tyneside area including The Gate entertainment complex in Newcastle city centre and the Sir John Fitzgerald pubs. Materials are then transferred to J & B’s Material Recycling Facility (MRF) for processing before going out to the recycling markets.
Gavin Lish, Business Development Executive with J & B Recycling, added: “Busy pubs and restaurants like the Angel View Inn produce a lot of waste, particularly cans and bottles.
“But that’s exactly our area of expertise – helping businesses of whatever size to manage their waste and increase the amount they recycle so as little as possible goes to landfill.”
