Changing chips for the better

Ask most people about their Cryptographic processor and you would no doubt receive blank stares or worse still.

But more than 4 billion of these processors are produced around the globe each year to go inside credit cards, SIM cards and all the other products we use daily that contain a chip and one Newcastle based business looks set to change these chips forever.

i-GXL Ltd, a Newcastle University spin-out business is working with semiconductor giants around the world to help reduce the size and cost of these chips and significantly improve their efficiency.

Formed in 2010 as a commercial venture out of the university’s electrical engineering department, the company has invented the unique technology and is now in talks with huge global brands to licence their Intellectual Property.

With support from the university and regional research grants, i-GXL Ltd has already proven the technology, having created the more efficient chips and is now approaching investors to take the business to the next level.

With both academic and commercial brains behind the business, the product is very much market driven and as such, demand for it is already high, despite not having yet been launched.

The company looks set to put the North East, which has a legacy in smart card technology through companies such as Atmel, on to the global map, with plans very much to grow the business from within the region, retaining its base in the science city of Newcastle.
