Field Music - Independent, Sunderland. Saturday April 14, 8pm. Tickets: £10.

Inventive North East outfit, Field Music, play a hometown gig this weekend as part of their current tour. Expect leftfield pop songs from at least four albums worth of material now amassed. Heralded as one best contemporary bands, Field Music have a style and direction that is completely their own, and will thrill fans of angular pop that takes in 70s glam, post-punk, together with unusual structures and deconstruction of melody.

La Harve - Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle. Sunday April 15, 3.55pm. Tickets: £8, £6.95 concs.

Set in the French harbor city which gives the film its name, La Harve follows Marcel Marx, a well-spoken bohenmian who works as a shoeshiner and discovers a young African refugee who is hiding. He takes pity on the boy and rallies friends and neighbours in order to send the boy refugee to relatives in London. The Daily Telegraph described it as having “immense minor-key charm” and channels director Aki Kaurismaki’s deadpan style.

The Great North Build - Hancock Museum. All weekend until April 14. Free admission

Newcastle University’s interactive Lego exhibition looks for answers to society’s big questions, such as how does a city plan for a growing and and ageing population? You are encouraged to take part in the construction of a giant Lego town. Around 110,000 bricks will be used to create the mini-city which will continue to take shape over the course of the exhibition.

AV Festival: Julien Maire - The Hatton Gallery, Newcastle. All weekend. Free admission.

The first UK solo exhibition by leading international new media artist Julien Maire. Responding to the festival’s theme of slowness, Maire creates his own cinematic machines, often using obsolete technology, to reflect on memory and the passage of time. This exhibition includes working made since 1995, alongside brand new commissions.
