Education partnership signed with Malaysia
The Prime Minister has signed a new education partnership with Malaysia, which is supported by industry.
UK-Malaysia Partners in Education agreement coincides with The Chevening Scholarships programme, which supports Malaysian students to study at UK universities and supported by BAE Systems.
Dyson and Lloyds Register Education Trust are also supporting 19 new engineering scholarships at the University of Southampton’s new camps in Malaysia.
Universities and Science Minister David Willetts said: “The UK and Malaysia have a strong and long-standing education relationship which this agreement seeks to reinforce and further deepen.
“There are thousands of British trained graduates in Malaysia, from Prime Minister Najib downwards.
“More than 80 British institutions already have links with Malaysian counterparts and this number is set to grow in the coming year.
“We want to build on these links and explore the potential for new cooperation in skills development.”
More than 14,000 Malaysian students currently study at UK universities, with a further 58,000 students studying our qualifications in Malaysia.
As part of Mr Cameron’s recent trade mission, he visited the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus and was joined by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
Mr Cameron said: “It is great we are able to do this at the Nottingham University Campus in Malaysia, the first full campus of a British University overseas.
“A really pioneering partnership that sees the full breadth of the academic study and research here in Malaysia.
“It represents the best of British, the best of Malaysia, and I am very pleased to be here today. I know, Prime Minister, that developing this campus has long been an urge of yours when you were Education Minister, so we are grateful to you, Prime Minister Najib, for your vision and support over many years in helping to bring this about.”
Professor Ian Pashby, Provost and chief executive officer at UNMC, said: “Today is a milestone for us, as we host two Prime Ministers on our campus for a significant global agenda in higher education.
“Bilateral relations between UK and Malaysia are of great significance to the continued growth of UNMC, as it is both a UK and a Malaysian university.”
