Manufacturer invests £1.5m in new equipment

A North East engineering company is investing £1.5 million in new equipment to meet worldwide demand for its products.

Express Engineering specialises in precision engineering services to the aerospace, defence, subsea oil and gas, power generation and medical sectors.

In recent months, orders for its precision components have significantly increased, and to continue its expansion, the firm have now taken on an additional 20,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing space at Princess Park, close to its Team Valley base.

The new factory will be used for welding, machining, assembly testing and storage and will create around 12 new jobs for CNC machinists, inspectors and supervisors. This will take employee numbers to a total of 210 - a 50% increase on 2008.

This news comes less than three years after the firm made a £3.2 million investment in its Kingsway headquarters. The firms also acquired Northern Precision Engineering last summer, and the 38 workers are now preparing to transfer to the Team Valley site in June.

Managing Director, Nigel Davison, said: “Despite all the investment we have made during the recession we once again found ourselves in need of more manufacturing space and this property is in the perfect location - very close to our head office.

“Although we will be closing the Wallsend premises all the people will be transferred to the new site and more jobs still remain to be filled.

“Keeping our operations close together is a huge benefit for us and puts us in a position to continue our growth of recent months.”
