UNW Apprentices going for accountancy gold at WorldSkills
Four talented accountancy students at the Newcastle firm of accountants and business advisers, UNW LLP, will represent the North East in the WorldSkills UK Accounting Technician national final in London on Saturday 19 May 2012.
Ralf Hall, Adam Turner, Aimee Wilde and Kelly-Ann Wilde have already won through at the tough regional heats held at Northumbria University in April, competing in teams that were judged on their professionalism and on a project that put their technical knowledge and work management skills to the test.
The WorldSkills UK competition was established by leading industry experts and training providers to recognise top performing students within the accountancy sector. Organised by the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT), it focuses on all the essential requirements for a successful accountancy career. The four UNW apprentices are already well on their way and in their second year of the programme, run with the North East Chamber of Commerce’s (NECC) training centre in Newcastle.
Steve Lant, partner at UNW said: “We are delighted and extremely proud of the success of our four AAT trainees, not only in this competition but in their development generally. They all chose to join UNW rather than going to university and they have learnt a great deal already, both academically and in relation to practical implementation”.
The UNW apprenticeship programme has proved very successful and is going from strength to strength. In 2011, UNW received the Employer of the Year Award from NECC for demonstrating an outstanding contribution and support to learner development and apprenticeships. Since then an administration trainee has joined and two further AAT trainees will be joining in the summer after completion of their A Levels.
UNW makes a significant investment in the development of its people and the firm was recognised earlier this year with the award of Investors in People Gold status accreditation.
Based at offices in Newcastle’s Citygate, UNW is an 11-partner led firm with specialist expertise in Audit & Assurance, Corporate Finance, Taxation Services (including Employment Taxes and VAT) and Accounting Services.
