Liverpool MP inspects new waste treatment plant works

The Shadow Secretary of State for Transport has inspected plans for a new £200m waste treatment plant on the banks of the River Mersey.

Garston and Halewood MP, Maria Eagle, visited United Utilities’ Liverpool Wastewater Treatment Works recently.

The works, at Sandon Dock in Regent Road, are being extended into the redundant Wellington Dock, and Liverpool City Council’s planning department approved the plans in January.

11,000 litres of waste will pass through the plant every second, serving more than 600,000 people and industry in Liverpool from Crosby in the north to Speke in the south.

The scheme to build the new works is expected to generate 350 jobs and is scheduled to be completed in 2016.

Maria Eagle said: “The River Mersey is iconic and vital to the economic fortune of Liverpool. The river’s transformation over the past 20 years has been the spark for some major investment in the waterfront area of the city and any scheme that will further improve the quality of water in the Mersey is to be welcomed.”

Mark Walker, United Utilities’ Principal Project Manager, said: “Our existing plant has played a key role in the clean up of the River Mersey and the new works will ensure we can continue to build upon that legacy.”
