Winning businessmen head to Japan

Four North East businessmen are preparing themselves for a trip to Japan, following their success at the Komatsu UK Technology Olympics.

Paul Dryden, Paul Phillips, Daniel Mason and Ian Chantler are all employees of excavator manufacturer Komatsu UK Ltd, and took part in the UK leg of the competition to demonstrate their skills in fabrication, painting, assembly and parts inspection.

They will now travel to Komatsu’s Osaka manufacturing plant next Month, where they will spend nine days training for the next stage of the competition.

Komatsu’s senior human resources manager Tracey Wilson commented: “Komatsu has been running the UK Technology Olympics for 14 years.

“The event is a great opportunity for employees and key suppliers to compete against each other in their chosen field.

“In addition it is a good motivational tool and helps staff to maintain the high quality standards the
company is known for.”

By competing in Osaka, the four will further improve their skills and learn new techniques to bring back and pass on to their colleagues in the UK.

Mrs Wilson continued: “They will continue to train and build on these new skills in preparation for the International competition which also takes place in Osaka at the end of October,”

Paul Dryden, who will be entering the parts inspection competition, said: “I am very much looking forward to having the experience of travelling to Osaka to compete and to have the opportunity to further improve my skills and learn new techniques from our colleagues in Japan.”

The annual Technology Olympics, coupled with the sharing of new skills and techniques plays a
significant part in Komatsu’s core philosophy of continuous improvement.
