University partnership to create 12,000 jobs

A partnership between Anglia Ruskin University and local councils could create over 12,000 full or part time jobs in Essex.

The MedTech Campus of the University has joined forces with Chelmsford City Council, Harlow District Council and Southend-on-Sea Borough Council to generate jobs in the medical technology sector.

Professor Michael Thorne, the Vice Chancellor of Anglia Ruskin University, said: “Our vision for the Anglia Ruskin MedTech Campus is as a globally leading centre for medical innovation, building on our world-leading research in subjects allied to medicine and the solid partnerships we have built up over the years with the healthcare sector and with industry.”

The medical technology sector is worth £170 billion annually, and the new partnership now aims to increase the UK input into this sector by over £1 billion to become one of the biggest health spaces in the world.

The region has already established strong links with the medical sector, including Olympus Keymed who have a base there. It is now hoped that the new partnership with Anglia Ruskin University would exploit exisiting potential and help to attract more opportunities to the area.
