Blackpool sets new company formation record

Despite the continuing recession, Blackpool has broken company formation records set five years ago.

In May 2007, 130 new businesses were formed in the town, a figure which, last month rose by 19% to 155.

Findings by formations experts Duport who specialise in helping businesses to grow, found that the number of new business established in Blackpool smashed pre-recession records.

Managing director of Duport Peter Valaitis said: “this is remarkable news for the town, and it looks as though entrepreneurship in Blackpool is now higher than it was before the credit crunch began.”

Blackpool used to be a popular holiday destination with people from all over the UK but like many other similar resorts around the country, was badly affected by the advent of cheap package holidays. Due to the recent economic downturn, the number of people holidaying in the seaside resort has risen, resulting in the formation of new businesses.

The development of the new Blackpool Tower Headland Outdoor Arena is set to become a popular venue for big musical acts including Elton John.

Sport is also providing Blackpool’s economy with an economic boost, with the golf Open Championships being held close by at Royal Lytham & St Anne’s Golf Club. It is hoped that the event will attract high levels of tourists to the area next month.
