Leeds retail park could create 6,000 jobs

Plans by the Scarborough Development Group could create more than 6,000 jobs if construction at Yorkshire business and retail park go ahead.

The plans for the next phase of development at Thorpe Park near Leeds would reduce traffic congestion and provide space for high growth SMEs.

The masterplan includes shops, a food store, cafes and restaurants, as well as us up 25-acres of public open space within Thorpe Park, which would also provide a long to the 113-acre Green Park.

Residents from the area have been asked to share their opinions on the scheme, after which Scarborough Development Group will analyse their thoughts and make any necessary changes in response to it.

Mark Jackson, the managing director, Scarborough Development Group, said: “Since Thorpe Park was first developed, the requirements of business occupiers have evolved significantly.

“Modern companies and their staff now demand more convenience to support their working lives, more amenities and facilities on hand, and greater sustainability, especially in how they travel to their place of work.

“We believe that our new plans can provide something new to meet the needs of modern business occupiers.”

Almost 50% of the proposed development has been designated as green space. Currently there is 600,000 sq ft of office space built at the site, whose current occupiers include IBM, National Grid, GE Capital and Regus.

It is believed that the new developments would improve the park for both existing and future occupiers, as well as more growth and greater prospects for local residents.

He added: “We want to create a truly diverse business community and the development will have a significant knock-on effect to support regeneration.”
