Retailers start sales in face of poor weather
Almost three quarters of high street retailers put on sales last week, in a bid to overcome the detrimental impact of the recent poor weather.
According to research by PwC, the figure is almost double the number of stores who put on sales on the corresponding week in 2009, a clear indication of the growing difficulties faced by many organisations.
Earlier this month, the Office of National Statistics indicated that retail sales had increased by 1.45 in May, on comparison with the previous month.
According to Christine Cross, chief retail adviser at PwC, the figures indicate that consumers are willing to spend on “celebrating Jubilees, football prowess or potential Olympic glory”.
However, they are generally unwilling to spend on a day to day basis.
