North East Charity Adopted by Leading Hotel
A North East charity could soon be flying high after receiving backing from one of the region’s newest hotels.
The Toma Fund, which supports children, teenagers, young people and their families affected by childhood cancer in the North East andCumbria, has been chosen as the adopted charity for the DoubleTree byHiltonNewcastleInternationalAirporthotel.
The hotel, which opened its doors adjacent to the airport terminal in November, will now hold a series of fundraising activities and events on behalf of the TOMA Fund throughout 2012, with the aim of raising between £5,000 and £10,000 on the charity’s behalf.
Seamus O’Hara, Manager at the DoubleTree by Hilton Newcastle International Airport Hotel, said: “When trying to choose an adopted charity we looked for something that would have a real impact on people living in the North East. Many of the staff here at the DoubleTree byHiltonNewcastleAirport have families, so the Toma Fund seemed like the perfect choice all round.
“Everyone at the hotel has pledged their support throughout the coming months and we hope that everything we raise will help the charity to continue its good work across the region.”
The Toma Fund was initially launched in memory of Jordan Thompson, who lost his battle with Leukaemia in 2007, aged 15, to help raise funds for a special teenage cancer unit atNewcastle’s RVI hospital.
After raising £400,000 to help build the unit, the Toma Fund now operates as an independent organisation, running in memory of Jordan and his cousin Sophie who died of Neuroblastoma aged two in March 2010.
The charity continues to raise funds for children and young people from birth to 24 years affected by childhood cancers, with proceeds being used to provide equipment and happy experiences for those undergoing cancer treatment and to support families who may be suffering financial difficulties while caring for their child.
Jordan’s mum Andrea Thompson, who founded the Toma Fund, said: “The Toma Fund has achieved so much over the past five years thanks to the support of fundraisers and organisations across the North East and Cumbria and every penny we receive is vital in allowing that much-needed work to continue.
“I am delighted that the DoubleTree by HiltonNewcastleInternational Airport hotel has now come on board and I look forward to working with the team there in the coming months.”
The DoubleTree by Hilton Newcastle International Airport hotel is one of a number of bars, hotels and restaurants owned and operated by the North East-based Cairn Group across the UK, with the portfolio also including the Holiday Inn Newcastle-Jesmond hotel in Newcastle, the Holiday Inn Darlington A1 Scotch Corner hotel in County Durham and Fratello’s Italian restaurants, which has branches across the region.
