40 jobs go at Northumberland seafood plant

Around 40 jobs are set to go at a Northumberland-based seafood firm after the current owners failed to find a suitable buyer.

When the Cumbrian Seafoods’ Border Laird plant in Amble went into administration in December 2011, Young’s Seafood Ltd took over the plant.

However, plans to sell the factory as a growing concern received a setback after a third party withdrew its offer to purchase the ailing plant.

After a five-month consultation the plant is now set to close, resulting in 38 job losses.

Chief operating officer of Young’s Seafood Ltd Peter Ward has said that those affected by the closure would be given priority for any suitable roles arising in the company.

He said: “We have explored all options in detail, including retaining the business, transferring the volume into Young’s facilities, and selling the business as a going concern but unfortunately no financially viable option has been found for the site moving forward.
