Construction output falls in May

British firms built less in May, according to official statistics.

Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures reveale that Construction output fell by 6.3% in the month, as companies failed to make the most of the extra working day, with the annual bank holiday at the end of May was postponed until June to help the public make the most of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

During the quarter (March - May 2012) output actually decreased by 7.4% in comparison to the same period of 2011. The main decline came from Government work, which fell by almost a quarter (22.9%), reflecting the impact of spending cuts.

Noble Francis, Economics Director at the Construction Products Association, said: “If government is serious about recovery in UK construction and the economy, it clearly needs to focus on getting a replacement for PFI sorted out immediately, getting work on the ground now by focusing on repair and maintenance and ensuring that the Green Deal becomes a success by giving householders greater incentives to invest in energy-saving improvements.”

The Energy Act 2011 included provisions for the ‘Green Deal’, which intends to reduce carboin emmissions cost by revolutionising the energy efficiency of British properties.
