Games will show UK can deliver, says PM

The 2012 London Olympic Games is an opportunity for the UK to showcase “beyond doubt that Britain can deliver”, according to the Prime Minister.

Speaking at the Olympic Park in East London, David Cameron said: “Look at what we’re capable of achieving as a nation, even at a difficult economic time.

This speech comes a day after US presidential candidate Mitt Romney expressed concern that the UK was not ready for the games. Yesterday Olympic officials were also forced to apologise to members of the North Korean women’s football team, after their images were shown next to the South Korean flag.

Commenting on the gaffe, Mr Cameron continued: “This was an honest mistake, honestly made.

Describing the eve of the Games as “a truly momentous day for our country”, Mr Cameron added: “In terms of the country coming together, I think the torch relay really demonstrates that this is not a London Games, this is not an England Games, this is a United Kingdom Games.

“I think we’ll show the whole world not just that we’ve come together as a United Kingdom, but also we’re extremely good at welcoming people from across the world.”
