Production scaled back at Honda Swindon
Production at the Honda car plant in Swindon is set to be scaled back, following falling European sales.
The manufacturer have announced that from September a third of its employees at the sites in South Marston will work a four day week.
However, no staff will lose out as they are employed on flexible contracts guaranteeing that they will be paid for a 37 hour week.
A spokesperson said that when production of the new CR-V commences in September alongside a new 1.6 litre diesel engine by the end of 2012, this will result in Honda doubling its UK production volumes from those recorded in 2011.
Commenting on the news, Jim D’Avila, regional officer for the Unite union, said: “The recession is biting deep and big successful companies like Honda are struggling to maintain a sensible level of production to retain everyone’s employment.
