Durham’s First Evening Market Hailed Great Success

Durham City’s first ever Evening Market took place in the city’s Market Place from 4pm – 9pm on Thursday 26th July.

Following the recommendations contained in Mary Portas’ report to improve retail on the high street, the City’s first Evening Market was launched by Durham Markets to provide a family friendly experience at a time of the day when the City Centre is usually at its quietest.

“The aim of the Evening Market was to provide a natural link between the close of the daytime economy and the start of the night-time economy in Durham,” says Colin Wilkes, Managing Director of Durham Markets, “Usually the streets are very quiet after five, so it was wonderful to see so many people turn out for the Market, making a real evening of it. Many people commented on what an excellent atmosphere it was, with people of all ages coming into town to browse the stalls, watch the entertainment and enjoy a good time together.”

“We have been overwhelmed by the support of both the public and traders alike,” adds Colin, “and we hope it will be possible to repeat the event again before too long.”

The Market included 25 food, fashion and homeware stalls, musical entertainment by Kris Atkins and b-bopping by The Wreckheads Krew - something for everyone. The Mayor and Mayoress of Durham also paid a visit to the Market to greet the traders and see the event for themselves.
