Nicholson’s Transport ramp up recruitment

A NORTH East transport business has expanded its team and its fleet as it looks to capitalise on a healthy upturn in trading.

Nicholson’s Transport has appointed Teesside University graduate Keisha Cox as its first ever management trainee.

It has also invested in two additional new rigid lorries in response to increasing demand for its North East delivery service.

Managing Director David Nicholson said: “Everyone knows the transport and logistics sector has had a difficult time over recent years but we have actually had an encouraging year. We have grown by 15% on last year, which is an amazing result against the backdrop of a serious recession acquiring a number of new customers in the sectors we are targeting, such as the transport of hazardous goods and chemicals.

“One area which is seeing significant growth is the local North East delivery service which runs in parallel with established pallet networks offering a more tailored approach for same day deliveries and bespoke consignments.

“At this time of year, we receive requests from customers to provide support as their own delivery drivers take their annual leave. It’s something that has really taken off in the last few months and like all our services, it comes with a guarantee of delivering on time, in full.”

New recruit Keisha, 22, graduated with a First Class Honours BSc in Business Systems Design and was offered her role via Teesside University’s Graduates for Business service.

She will understudy all roles across the Nicholson Group to gain an understanding of the key processes and systems, before delivering recommendations for optimum performance, particularly around technology.

Keisha said: “I am very excited to be working with Nicholson’s Transport and want to develop within the business as much as I can.

“Nicholson’s is a company with a culture of training and support and I have been very encouraged with everything I have seen so far.”

Nicholson’s two new lorries – an 18 tonne and a 24 tonne rigid Mercedes – take the company’s fleet to 18. One of its vehicles was decorated with a Union Jack earlier this year to celebrate Nicholson’s 25th anniversary and support the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and 2012 Olympics.
