Taylor Wimpey win Olympic housing bid

Home builders Taylor Wimpey have won a contract to build new homes on the Olympic Village site, along with L&Q London Housing Association.

The contract has been granted by London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) and is the second appointment for the Olympic park in two months.

As one of the UK’s largest housing construction companies, Taylor Wimpey is one of the first five to be granted contracts to build neighbourhoods on the Olympic grounds in East London.

Taylor Wimpey’s community, named Chobham Manor, will be built where the basketball arena currently stands and will make use of the infrastructure left by the Olympic Village, using heating, broadband fibre optics and telecoms networks.

75% of the build will be housing, and 870 homes will be built and construction will begin in October.

The houses will provide much needed affordable accommodation for families in the local area, with homes with at least 3 bedrooms. The neighbourhood will also be supported by walk-in health centre, two nurseries, two multi-purpose community spaces, neighbourhood shops and the nearby Chobham Academy School.

Chobham Manor will sit between the current Athlete’s Village and Lee Valley VeloPark and Taylor Wimpey plan to complete the neighbourhood by the end of 2014.

Pete Redfern, Group Chief Executive of Taylor Wimpey plc, said: “Chobham Manor will see us work with LLDC and L&Q to create a brand new community, providing east London with much needed family homes, facilities and supporting infrastructure.

“Engaging with (Londoners’) to create a truly sustainable community is at the heart of our approach and we will work closely with all stakeholders to ensure that we deliver a development of which we and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park’s residents can all be proud.”

This is part of a plan for the next 20 years approved by LLDC to build 6,800 homes on the site.
