Nicholson’s gold run for Team GB
A TRANSPORT, warehousing and distribution firm is hoping Paralympic success will drive a gold rush for a disability sports group.
Nicholson’s Transport is donating £10 for every gold medal won by Team GB at the Paralympics to the Durham Area Disability Leisure Group (DADLG).
For the past 14 years, DADLG has been providing sports and leisure activities for children and young people with disabilities across County Durham.
And it hopes Nicholson’s gold medal pledge will help dozens of youngsters continue to enjoy activities such as quad biking, taekwondo, football, trampoline, cycling and other sports.
DADLG co-ordinator Lynne Watson said: “Nicholson’s Transport has supported what we do for many years, but this is such a generous offer. I think Team GB is expected to get more than 60 gold medals, so it’s a significant pledge.
“All of our young people love sport, whether they come along to keep fit or just to have fun taking part in team games. We recently secured a base at Durham University’s fantastic sports facilities at Maiden Castle, so we have even been able to extend our range to rowing, fencing and virtual spinning.”
DADLG, whose patron is Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, provides sports and leisure activities for up to 300 young people and their families at Maiden Castle. Its members are young people aged between eight and 25, with physical, learning, sensory and multiple disabilities, who without the support of DADLG would find it difficult to access regular sports opportunities.
Nicholson’s Transport decided to launch its gold medal pledge after realising its own silver anniversary coincided with Olympic and Paralympic year, providing a genuine and fun opportunity to support to DADLG
David Nicholson, managing director of Nicholson’s Transport, said: “We have been great admirers and supporters of DADLG for many years because they raise the hopes and aspirations of the young people they work with.
“After Team GB’s success in the Olympics, the whole country is in a sporting mood and we thought this was a fantastic way of supporting an inspirational charity. It’s great to know that every single gold medal that Team GB wins will be helping the group and I hope other businesses – and our customers – get behind us by pledging their support too.”
The Paralympic Games start on August 29, with the closing ceremony on September 9. To support Nicholson’s Transport’s gold medal pledge, call (01642) 556622 or e-mail melanie.taylor@nicholsonstransport.co.uk You can follow the campaign on twitter @NicTransport
