Construction company Morgan Sindall have won a £26m contract to build new student accommodation on Shepherds Bush Road in London.

The joint venture between Carlyle Group and Generation Estates will transform the site where the Hammersmith Palais dance and music venue used to stand.

Building for Pure Student Living, Morgan Sindall will begin construction this month to complete the programme for the 2013/14 academic year.

The new facility will be spread over 23,000 sq ft to provide accommodation for 418 students and ground floor leisure facilities for people living in the local area.

Managing Director of Morgan Sindalls, Peter Jacobs, said: ““We’re delighted to be part of the project team giving this key site in London a new lease of life in a contemporary, sustainable development.”

The firm will keep the historic wall that runs along the edge of the site and contains artwork which commemorates Hammersmith Palais and remains as part of London’s cultural heritage.

Make Architect’s designed the project building, which includes an “energy centre” used to provide hot water from high efficiency boilers to the entire building, which will be roofed with vegetation and plants.

Working in affordable housing, urban regeneration, investments and construction and infrastructure, Morgan Sindall have made sustainability a priority for the group as a whole.

The Hammersmith Palais site is the latest in a string of successes for the design and infrastructure firm, which has provided over 10,000 accommodation spots for students in the last three years.

Most recently the company worked on a £15m project at the Royal Veterinary College and won two awards from the Royal Institute of British Architects.

Reading University are also the in midst of working with Morgan Sindall on a townhouse and flat accommodation project, and are set to provide apartment blocks for the National Construction College in Norfolk.
