SURGO Completes Over £6m Education Projects
One of the region’s leading building contractors, Surgo Construction, has recently completed three education sector projects with a combined value of more than £6m.
These three successfully concluded projects add further to the firm’s reputation for quality workmanship and attention to detail within the regional construction market.
A major refurbishment project at Chapman House in Sandyford Park, the Junior School of Central Newcastle High School, was handed over to meet the start of the new school year.
Set in five acres of grounds, and including a Grade II listed mansion designed by John Dobson, the site has been transformed into a cutting edge learning environment which now houses all the junior school pupils.
This four phase project, which included a small extension, has been very well received by the children and teaching staff alike.
Angela Charlton, who was appointed as head of the Junior School last year, has overseen the transformation of its facilities. She commented:
“We have been very impressed with Surgo’s work and flexible attitude throughout the building work. It was an immense task and we are all delighted with the finished product. The girls’ learning environment is incredibly important and the new classrooms and facilities will really enhance the teaching and learning.”
Jeff Alexander, director of Surgo Construction, added: “Both the neighbouring residents and the teaching staff have been tremendously supportive throughout the build programme – very understanding and helpful. The teaching staff in particular, really put themselves out for us to assist the build process and we are very pleased that the project has gone so well and the children are pleased with their new school environment as the Junior School embarks on the next phase of its growth.”
Another recently completed project was the construction of new classrooms and other building modification work at St Thomas More RC School, Blaydon. Valued at £2.1m the works form part of the school’s long term improvement plans.
At Durham University’s Queen’s Campus in Stockton, Surgo has recently completed construction of the £2.1m Wolfson Research Institute which will support research into medicine, health and well being adding to existing laboratories, offices and staff accommodation. The building was also handed over in time for the new academic year.
