Retirement development to open 1,000 Tees Valley jobs
A Tees Valley retirement home development will bring up to 1,000 jobs to the North East, including at least 100 permanent posts.
Housebuilder Maher Developments has submitted planning applications to build an innovative retirement village with social and leisure facilities.
The company plans to build 350 sustainable homes, which will be priced between £140,000 and £250,000, while 10% of homes will be for care staff and maintenance workers.
Maher’s project, based at Mount Leven Farm in Yarm, will provide up to 750 construction jobs and hopes to add to the economy by opening up local supply chains and bringing business to retailers.
Investment from the Middle East has enabled the property developer to create the first retirement community in the UK on this scale.
Maher hopes to roll out the Tees Valley model across a further 20 sites in the country, which will also be backed by international investors.
Javed Majid of Maher Projects Limited said: “I am hugely excited about this development and the benefits for the Tees Valley.
“The North East has the highest level of unemployment in the country and creating jobs to this level will have a major positive impact on the local and regional economy.
“I am absolutely determined that as many of the jobs as possible will go to local people. I want to put something back into the Tees Valley community, which I have lived and worked in for many years, and which has been very good to me, my family and my businesses.”
