North East Graduates Appointed to New Microbrewery

Two North East graduates are enjoying their first taste of success after joining the region’s newest microbrewery.

Grace Noon and Alan Brown, who both graduated from the University of Sunderland this summer, have been given Internships at the recently opened Sonnet 43 Brew House at Coxhoe, County Durham.

Grace, who lives in Jarrow, has been appointed Marketing and Business Development Co-ordinator, responsible for overseeing the brewery’s business development and promoting its current range of four craft ales to pubs and venues across the region.

The 22 year-old, who achieved a first BA (Hons) Business and Marketing Management degree, will work alongside fellow new arrival Alan, from Shotton Colliery, who takes the role of Sales and Marketing Co-ordinator.

While Grace has already held similar roles at regional organisations such as Straughans Chartered Accountants and Horizonworks, this will be Alan’s first full time position since receiving his BA (Hons) Business and Management degree.

The former New College Durham Business Student of the Year is now set to assist in both the business development and operational aspects of the purpose-built site, founded adjoining the Kicking Cuddy pub by North East restaurateur Mark Hird.

He said: “I have always had a real passion for business and enterprise and worked hard to develop my skills both in the classroom and outside of the academic setting. I’m now keen to put these skills to use and am grateful to Mark for giving me the opportunity to work with Grace and the rest of the Sonnet 43 team.”

The Sonnet 43 Brew House, named after the well-known verse by Elizabeth Barratt Browning who was born and raised at nearby Coxhoe Hall, is currently producing barrels of craft ales for sale at pubs and bars across the North East.

Plans are also in place to extend deliveries beyond Northern England and produce bottles of the ales for sale to the leisure industry, off-licence trade and direct to the public.

These expected to be available by winter 2012, with both Grace and Alan coming on board to help lead their development and assist in future expansion plans.

Grace said: “While I’ve been working in marketing for more than two years this is my first foray into the brewing industry and I’m eagerly anticipating the challenge ahead.”
