Veolia secure £460m waste deal with Leeds

Veolia Environmental Services have secured a 25-year deal worth £460m to provide waste management services to Leeds City Council.

The deal includes the installation of a recycling and energy recovery facility that is estimated to provide savings of £200m compared with landfill.

It will be build in the East Leeds Cross Green Industrial Area, and will supply the National Grid with enough electricity to power 20,000 households.

Veolia are expected to recruit 300 people to begin work on the construction, which will start in summer 2013. 45 permanent positions will be created as a result.

Jérôme Le Conte, CEO of Veolia Environmental Services, said: “This remarkable facility reflects our strategic commitment to the UK market and our sustainable development approach that is reflected in the construction of new waste treatment and energy recovery plants delivering exceptional environmental performance.

“In the United Kingdom, Veolia Environmental Services is currently involved in 12 PFI/PPPs. This type of partnership contract will help make it possible to achieve the targets set under the European Landfill Directive.”
