Clarke Mairs sponsors celebrity charity event

A star-studded concert to raise money for a teenage cancer charity will be staged next month in Newcastle with performances from Britain’s Got Talent winner Jai McDowell, NSPCC Christmas single singer Shauna Gallon and Emmerdale’s Charlie Hardwick.

The Christmas at the Cathedral event, to be held at the Cathedral Church of St Nicholas on Thursday December 6, is this year being sponsored by Newcastle law firm Clarke Mairs. It will raise money for Teenage Cancer Trust, the only UK charity dedicated to improving the lives of 13-24 year olds diagnosed with cancer.

The concert will also feature performances by British tenor Ian Storey, Lindisfarne’s Billy Mitchell and include readings by Tim Healy, David Leon from ITV’s Vera, Ian Payne from ITV North East, Simon Davies the chief executive of Teenage Cancer Trust, Lord-Lieutenant Nigel Sherlock OBE and The Bishop of Newcastle the Right Reverend Martin Wharton.

It is hoped that the concert will raise thousands of pounds to help with the running costs of both the unit at the Freeman Hospital, which opened earlier this year and caters for young people between 18 and 24 with cancer, and the second Teenage Cancer Trust unit at the Great North Childrens’ Hospital at the RVI which provides care for 13 to 18 year olds.

The concert is part of the Teenage Cancer Trust North East Fundraising Board’s efforts to raise £100,000 over the course of the next year to support Teenage Cancer Trust’s work in the region. This year the main sponsor is Newcastle law firm, Clarke Mairs.

Tim Clarke, senior partner said: “We are really pleased to be supporting this year’s concert and hope our involvement with the Trust will grow each year to help raise money for both cancer units at the Freeman and RVI which help young people across the region”.

The concert is being organised by the Teenage Cancer Trust North East Fundraising Board who are working with Lindisfarne’s Ray Laidlaw to produce the event. Ray also produced the previous Teenage Cancer Trust ‘Bandstand’ shows at the Sage Gateshead starring Paul Weller, Jools Holland and Roger Daltrey.

Ray Laidlaw said “I am very pleased to be working with Teenage Cancer Trust on this elegant concert which will be the most high profile event to the held in the north east this Christmas. We have secured an excellent line up and are very pleased to have support from a number of talented performers who will perform in one of the most outstanding settings in Newcastle”.

Jonathan Wallis, the chairman of the Teenage Cancer Trust North East Board added: “Both Teenage Cancer Trust and the North East Fundraising Board are looking to develop long term relationships with local businesses and are delighted that Clarke Mairs wish to be our overall sponsor this year.”
