Come DIne With Me Star Opens NE Restaurant
ONE of the country’s top cabaret stars is preparing to wow audiences of a different kind after opening his own restaurant.
Female impersonator Simon Green has performed at Royal Variety Performances and at venues in London’s West End in a 30 year career and also saw off competition from fellow contestants to win the Channel 4 cookery show Come Dine With Me.
Now, the performer who, as Betty Legs Diamond, is the star attraction at Newcastle cabaret club The Boulevard, is the creative force behind Seasons, at Front Street, Whickham.
Simon will combine his four times-weekly performances at the Churchill Street club with developing the menu at Seasons, which he runs with business partners Matthew Armstrong and Kevin Barnard who both have extensive experience of the hospitality industry.
Simon has worked closely with head chef Duncan Oakley to create a menu based on modern English cuisine and locally sourced ingredients, which will change monthly to reflect what is seasonally available.
“We are very fortunate here in the North East to have access to superb meat, fish, dairy and vegetables, “ he said, “and by using what is in season we can present diners with an ever changing and affordable menu.”
Among the restaurant’s current choice of starters are black pudding with goats cheese and caramelised onion and duck pate infused with cognac and cranberries with toast, while main courses include lamb steaks with dauphinoise potatoes, fresh sea bass in a lemon and dill butter sauce with winter vegetables and beef and ale stew with dumplings.
Desserts, such as vanilla and black cherry panna cotta, jam roly-poly and chocolate truffle torte, are all home made with the star attraction, a sherry trifle, made to Simon’s own recipe.
Seasons is open from 6pm to 10pm on Tuesdays to Saturdays and from noon to 3pm and 6pm to 9pm on Sundays. It is closed on Mondays.
