County Durham company sees solid growth in Scotland

Darlington-based Stone Technical Services has seen a huge leap in demand since opening its new office in Scotland just three months ago.

Stone, which specialises in a range of high level repair, maintenance and conservation services, opened an office in Edinburgh in August thanks to an increase in demand for its services in the region.

Since launching in Edinburgh, Stone has secured around £100,000 worth of work.

The company has signed a three year contract with Renfrewshire Council to carry out the annual testing of its lightning protection and is now also carrying out a complete refurbishment and re-fit of the weather vane at Stumpy Tower in Girvan, which was originally built as a prison in 1827 and is now a Grade B listed building in the South Ayrshire town.

Other contracts in Scotland include a significant amount of work with South Ayrshire Council carrying out a variety of conservation, restoration and general maintenance on historic buildings, schools and public amenities.

The opening of the Edinburgh office will lead to further recruitment for Stone Technical Services which last year created 10 new jobs in the North East taking its workforce to 30. It’s hoped around five new positions will be created in the next twelve months.

The Edinburgh office adds to Stone’s UK-wide network which includes its HQ on Kellaw Road in Darlington and sites in Cheshire, central London and in Middlesex.

Edinburgh and the surrounding areas have such a vast cultural heritage, one of our areas of expertise, and we’re looking forward to working with a range of businesses and organisations as we, hopefully, continue to grow throughout Scotland. There’s also a lot of interest in our facilities management capabilities as we don’t just carry out general maintenance programmes, but also those that involve sensitive or high level repairs or specialist access. And it is this variety of expertise that is helping with our development.”

Throughout this year, Stone Technical Services has secured a number of significant contracts working all over the UK on buildings such as North Tees Hospital in Stockton, St Paul’s Cathedral in London, Merrion House in Leeds, Lindisfarne Castle, Hexham Abbey and Lumley Castle.

Stone also works with housing associations on developments, on historic structures, churches, war memorials, schools, offices and car parks as well as with councils, English Heritage, the National Trust and Network Rail to carry out a range of maintenance, safety and conservation projects.
