School kids go wild for a day

Pupils from two schools in Newcastle kick- started the second half of their autumn term with a trip into Northumberland, all courtesy of Tarmac Ltd. The schools, Stocksfield Avenue Primary School in Fenham and Atkinson Road Academy in Benwell were joint runners up in Northumberland Wildlife Trust’s Win With Wildlife competition which was sponsored by the international company which currently operates seven quarries in the Region. Luckily, the rain stopped for the youngsters who had a wonderful time spotting red squirrels on a nature walk through Kielder Forest then feeding and handling birds of prey at the Kielder Birds of Prey Centre followed by a spectacular falconry display. The pupils ended the day dressed in fluorescent jackets and hard hats and driving deep down into Tarmac’s Barrasford Quarry (near Hexham) for a guided tour and a chance to climb into a selection of heavy earth moving machinery. Tarmac joined forces with Northumberland Wildlife Trust at the start of this year to run the competition for schools in Northumberland, Newcastle and North Tyneside.
