Groundwork NE Helps Young People Get Into Work

Groundwork North East, a social enterprise dedicated to improving the lives of people across the region, is delivering a pioneering programme to get unemployed young people into work, education and training.

Groundwork North East is delivering Nu-Traxx provision in County Durham alongside Stockton Riverside College and The Salvation Army’s ‘Employment Plus’ programme on behalf of Pertemps People Development Group. Sunderland College, personal development and careers service provider, IGEN Ltd, The Prince’s Trust and employment support charity The Morrison Trust are delivering provision across the rest of the North East.

Nu-Traxx is part of the Government’s Youth Contract initiative, which is aimed at helping young people who are NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training), to engage in education and training and is open to 16-17 year olds with no A*-C GCSE grades.

The North East had the second highest percentage of 16-24 year old NEETs in the country, at 21%, compared to the national average of 17%, in the third quarter of this year, according to Government figures.

During a three year period the Youth Contract will engage and recruit more than 4,000 young people across the region, offering them one to one support to help them reach their full potential by breaking down barriers to education, employment and training.

It will deliver help to young people by identifying their talents and interests through team building activities and skills based workshops.

Nu-Traxx enables young people to access services at their own pace, with a personal development plan being put into place by their coach to guide them along the course.

“Young people are our future and it is vital for them personally and for the economic wellbeing of the region that they are given the support to allow them to meet their full potential and make a contribution to the society.”

Mark Fryett, Site Manager of Pertemps People Development Group, said: “Nu-Traxx is bringing together like-minded organisations that will work in partnership to help young unemployed people in the North East into training, education or employment.

“We are determined to engage with young people, who currently feel disconnected and ill-equipped to venture out into the world of work or training, to give them the skills to succeed. “
