Tech firm helps drivers through the cold snap

NORTH East technology firm Eemits has landed a contract with a Scottish council that will see it install its specialist radio equipment into 77 gritter vehicles this winter.

Billingham-based Eemits, which delivers bespoke communications solutions to a wide range of clients, has signed a deal with South Lanarkshire Council to install cutting-edge mobile radios into its fleet of gritters as the icy conditions set in.

The radios will enable drivers to communicate with each other, allowing them to provide a more efficient, safer service in an area which, like many parts of Scotland, suffers from more snow than most other areas of the UK.

Gritter drivers are heavily reliant on up-to-date information in all kinds of hostile and very changeable weather and sometimes inaccessible places.

Two-way radio technology is the ideal solution and the new South Lanarkshire system covers the whole region which in some parts has no cellular network.

The contract is the latest in a number of deals won by Eemits from outside the North East, with transport group Metrobus and NHS organisations among recent client wins for the firm.

“It’s fantastic to be able to support such a great customer and ensure that the roads of South Lanarkshire will be safer for drivers this winter,” said Craig Matthews, managing director at Eemits.

“The council was initially quite reluctant to use a supplier based so far away from them but I believe our quality, expertise and commitment to delivering on our promises shone through.”
