University applications down
University applications have fallen for the second year, figures from Ucas show.
As the deadline for autumn 2013 starts approaches, interim figures at mid December show that for 303,861 people had applied to UK universities, down from 321,908 the previous year.
Among English students, applications were down 6.5%, moving from 245,882 to 229,932. The most noticeable drop was in Welsh applicants, at 11.7% fewer.
Pam Tatlow, Chief Executive of the university think tank, million+ said: “The worrying trend of falling university applications continues, according to the most recent statistics published by UCAS.
“We urge the Government to step in with a national campaign to promote the value of university for potential students currently considering their options, whether they are about to leave school or considering a university course later in life.”
