Radical rethink for South Shields town centre
An ambitious £100million masterplan to make South Shields an exciting destination every day of the year will be launched on Tuesday (January 8).
“South Shields 365” has been drawn-up by South Tyneside Council and outlines a major town centre overhaul including a new cinema, library and retail and leisure facilities.
Like high streets across the country, South Shields needs to embrace change as it faces up to the twin threats of an unforgiving economic climate and fundamental changes to shopping habits.
This fascinating footage from the 1950s reveals a bygone era of bustling streets, long before the rise of internet shopping and out of town retail parks reduced town centre footfall.
Change is needed if South Shields town centre is to prosper – and the South Shields 365 masterplan sets out a series of lasting improvements.
But these are not just words – a number of prospective private sector development partners have already expressed an interest in making the South Shields 365 masterplan a reality.
South Tyneside Council’s Leader, Iain Malcolm, and Chief Executive, Martin Swales, will outline the masterplan in detail during Tuesday’s launch event at One Trinity Green.
