Brighton readies proposals for City Deal
The city of Brighton is due to submit an application for a government City Deal on Tuesday, and has set out how the deal will improve the region.
Bidding for one of 20 deals, the agreement will be tailored to the city’s needs, if it is successful, and give greater powers to the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership.
Brighton hopes to be one of the chosen regions in receipt of the City Deal to boost the economy by stimulating projects and initiatives and generating a “step change” in how governance is arranged in the area.
The South East city has been working with the Adur and Lewes areas to formulate a strategy that will focus on fledgling environmental industries if the deal bid is successful.
Brighton also hopes to build on its existing success in the creative, digital and I.T sectors, and create space for new jobs in an “eco-tech” hub.
The city’s two universities, which produce approximately 7,000 graduates a year, could also benefit from the proposed changes if new jobs are created.
Proposals for a 25,000 sq ft eco-tech business centre at Toads Hole Valley is also key to Brighton’s City Deal, with plans to develop a sustainable site for living, working and education.
Brighton and Hove Council aim to develop employment, transport, shopping, infrastructure and planning guidance by 2030, as well as building up to 11,300 new homes in the region.
