Fleets warned as snow and ice predicted
The Fuelcard Company urges drivers to plan ahead as freezing temperatures set to hit UK
After a mostly clement December and January, freezing temperatures are predicted to hit the UK this weekend. The Fuelcard Company is warning fleet drivers to prepare their vehicles and refresh their memories of how to drive safely in ice and snow.
Widespread flooding caused by the recent deluge of rain has left many UK roads in poor condition, and with temperatures set to drop, there are concerns standing water could turn into deadly sheet ice.
Snow is one of the biggest sources of worry for British drivers, but Jakes de Kock, Marketing Director at The Fuelcard Company has a few simple tips to make any snowfall stress free. He said:
“Preparation is one of the most important factors in ensuring road safety this winter, so be sure to keep an eye on daily weather reports before heading out. Our roads can be dangerous places at the best of times but coupled with poor visibility and slippery road surfaces, drivers need to be extra vigilant.
“Make sure all vehicles are well maintained and up to date with services; breakdowns are far more common during cold spells and cost businesses valuable time and money – not to mention, no one wants to stand by the side of a freezing motorway waiting to be rescued!
“Check tyres weekly to ensure they are at the correct pressures and have a tread of at least 3mm to deal with snow and ice. Although it can be tempting to bundle up in heavy boots and gloves, make sure you change before setting off as it’s important to be connected to your vehicle at all times, especially when there’s a chance of skidding.
“Finally, it’s a good idea to keep a small ‘survival’ pack in your car boot. A few suggestions include: jump leads, a torch, fully charged mobile phone, first aid kit, ice scraper, de-icer, blanket, high visibility jacket and snack bars. You might never need to use it, but if the worst happens then at least you’ll be prepared.”
