Chartered surveyor in City Deal to drive growth

A North East chartered surveyor has been recruited by the NewcastleGateshead City Deal group to help it deliver its remit of boosting city growth.

Kevan Carrick, principal of JK Property Consultants joins 20 other regional big hitters on the panel, which received new powers from Whitehall in September in exchange for responsibility for delivering growth locally.

In operation nationally, City Deals have been introduced by the government to allow different areas to shape their own economic destiny, forge new public-private partnerships and remove barriers to development.

The recently-awarded powers are allowing Newcastle City Council to secure funding from the growth in business rates achieved by the development of four key sites: Science Central at Gallowgate, Central Station, East Pilgrim Street and Gateshead Quays.

These sites, which cover 80 hectares of land, will become ‘accelerated development zones (ADZ’s) and are expected to attract £800m of private sector investment and create up to 13,000 permanent jobs.

Kevan Carrick of JK Property Consultants, said: “It is a privilege to be involved with the NewcastleGateshead City Deal group, which is committed to working with partners within the region to find solutions to many of the challenges facing us. By doing this, rather than passing issues back up the chain to the government, we will be able to make vital developments happen much more quickly.”

Kevan is also a member of the Newcastle Gateshead Housing Advisory Group, providing guidance on the delivery of housing development across the area. The group has been instrumental the delivery of major housing renewal in Bensham, Scotswood and Benwell and in the east end of Newcastle.
