£2M investment brings new homes to Newton Aycliffe

Work on a development which will provide affordable houses for rent has begun in Newton Aycliffe.

Homes and Communities organisation, livin, has demolished the disused Greenfields Nursing Home, at Greenfield Way and has commenced building 11 two-bedroom and 11 three-bedroom homes for affordable rent at approximately 80 per cent of market cost.

The new development is being built in partnership with the Goverments’ Homes and Community Agency and house-building group Galliford Try and involves an investment of around £2 million.

Wayne Harris, executive director property and development for livin, said: “The site at Greenfields is our largest new build development to date. We commenced building our first new homes at the end of 2011 and the demand for the properties has been astronomical.

“The Greenfields site comes as part of a £28m investment project to build 350 - 400 new homes over the next two years to meet housing shortage locally.”

Steve McCoy, managing director with Galliford Try in the North East, said: “We are delighted to have been selected to develop this site in partnership with livin. Providing energy efficient, affordable homes in the region is one of our key objectives.”

The homes, which will be built to strict environmental standards, boast a range of energy saving features including high levels of insulation, double glazing and high efficiency boilers to help tenants save money on utility bills as well as being more environmentally responsible.
