County Durham support workers get award accolade

A group of County Durham support workers at a Tees Valley Housing development, whose work is being considered as a national template for communication, have won an award.

The award for integrated working was presented by Durham County Council, after the group was nominated by members of the authority’s Children and Young People Services team.

Natalie Rae and Hannah Mallan, of Tees Valley Housing, Jayne Price of the council’s Parent Support team, and Gemma Leather, of Home Group, had worked together to make the wording in Family Links’ Nurturing Programme easier to understand for parents with learning disabilities.

Now, the new lexicon which was developed by the group at Tees Valley Housing’s The Square young parents support development, in St Helen Auckland, near Bishop Auckland, is being considered for use with parents with learning disabilities across Family Links’ national network.

Natalie, who now works as a project worker at Tees Valley Housing’s Coney Avenue young parents support development, in Bishop Auckland, said: “It was great to be recognised with this award. The four of us have worked closely together with Family Links and developed the language which was being used, to make it more understandable for people who might benefit from the Family Links Nurturing Programme. We are all very proud that our work may now be delivered nationally.”
