Student's business becomes global hit

An entrepreneurial student is reaping the success of his talents after setting up his own online clothing business. Sam White, 18 from Middlesbrough, started Kult Clothing initially as a hobby to complement his A level studies at Prior Pursglove College in Fine Art, Photography and English Literature.

His designs have now gone global and are a hit with celebrities such as the rapper Azealia Banks who endorsed the clothes on Twitter and Big Brother contestant Thomas O’Connell who has been pictured wearing them at a publicity event.

Aimed at a loud and rude younger market, Sam prints designs onto t-shirts, sweaters, hats and bags at a student friendly price. His website is now getting 500 hits a day and he has sold items to people as far as New York, Florida, Australia, Norway and Finland as well as where it all began, students from Prior Pursglove College. Sam is also currently dealing with stockists in Sweden who are interested in the clothes.

“I started Kult Clothing in 2011 initially on Facebook and it started to grow immediately. I had a string of lucky breaks where some influential people were trafficked to my profile and everything has just gone from there. I don’t like how everything in this country is censored; the media sensationalise a lot of unnecessary things so the idea behind the brand is quite rebellious” said Sam.

Sam thinks his A level studies at Prior Pursglove gave him the inspiration to start up the business, “Studying at Prior Pursglove has matured my thinking, Fine Art and English Literature go together greatly and it helps develop your own concept for your own art work.”

Sam plans to continue with his studies next year at Manchester Metropolitan University whilst also growing his business. He would like to find premises to store the clothes now the demands for stock are increasing and aims to open a flagship store in a few years’ time. “I’ve always wanted to be recognised for something I do. My absolute dream would be to start my own high fashion label” he added.
