Newcastle Hotel celebrates hat-trick of awards

Staff at a Newcastle Hotel have celebrated winning a hat-trick of prestigious awards just one year after opening for business.

Sleeperz Hotel Newcastle, a 98-bedroom premium budget hotel, opened in January 2012 on the site of a former derelict parcel works. It has quickly established itself as one of the city’s favourite destinations for leisure and business travellers.

Sleeperz Hotels Newcastle – Year to Remember:

  • Welcomed 34,000 guests in 12 months
  • Winner: RIBA Hadrian Award from the Royal Institute of British Architects for architectural excellence
  • Winner: LateRooms.com Simply the Guest Awards 2012 in the Family Friendly Hotels category.
  • Winner: TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence, with a reader review rating of 4.5 out of 5
  • Ranked #14 out of 82 hotels in Newcastle on TripAdvisor
  • Opened a free contemporary arts exhibition space called Art in the Arch@Sleeperz for guests and the public

David Myers, chief executive of Sleeperz Hotels, said: “We knew when we opened our doors that we were bringing something new and exciting to Newcastle’s hotel scene, but these awards confirm how highly Sleeperz Hotels are rated by the public, travel industry and the finest architects in Britain.”

Sleeperz Hotels specialise in transforming unusual or awkwardly shaped pieces of land close to mainline rail stations into striking architecturally impressive modern hotels.

Its first hotel, Sleeperz Cardiff, also won a RIBA award for architectural excellence within a year of opening.

“A stay at Sleeperz offers a stylish urban living experience in a city centre hotel at extremely affordable prices. What sets us apart from other competitors in the budget hotel sector is our passion for contemporary design, excellent customer service, attention to detail and distinctive vibrant interiors,” said Mr. Myers.

To celebrate its achievements Sleeperz Hotels transformed an original railway arch inside the Newcastle hotel into a contemporary art exhibition space for hotel guests and the public to enjoy.

ArtintheArch@Sleeperz is an exhibition of light-based art by Durham artist Mick Stephenson and is curated by Carlo Viglianisi and Nick Maylan of independent Durham arts organisation Empty Shop.

The exhibition was unveiled at the hotel’s first birthday party and is open to the public free of charge.

Mick Stephenson, a former sound and lighting roadie for bands including Pink Floyd and The Police, installed light-based sculptures inspired by building, architecture and design.

A photographic exhibition also tells the story of how the hotel was transformed from dilapidated sheds into a sleek glass fronted city hotel.
