Professor Brian Cox represents Manchester businesses

Professor Brian Cox has brought international attention to opportunities in Greater Manchester during a real estate conference in Cannes on Monday.

The acclaimed physicist, who studied at the University of Manchester, delivered the keynote speech on the first day of the MIPIM event in France.

Businesses in Manchester hope to use the conference to set themselves apart as an innovative city paving the way for new standards across research, arts, entertainment, science and technology.

The city’s development of the recently discovered ‘miracle’ material, graphene, was also highlighted as a major advance that will boost Manchester’s connections in the science sector.

Mike Emmerich, chief executive of think tank, New Economy, said: “Manchester’s activity at MIPIM is underpinned by rigorous intellectual debate that aims to show the true colours of the city.

“In particular, the European Cities debate delivered by Jim O’ Neill has become a pivotal event in which Manchester can benchmark its progress against the cities of Amsterdam, Barcelona and Hamburg.

“As Manchester continues to demonstrate that it is the UK’s most important economic region outside of the South East, events like MIPIM are absolutely essential platforms on which the city can collaborate and also compete effectively.”
