Darlington Building Society's community support nationally recognised

Darlington Building Society, the North East region’s only local building society, has received national recognition for its support of community initiatives.

The Society has won the Mortgage Finance Gazette (MFG) Award for Community Services, the sixth time since 2002 that Darlington Building Society has been presented with this prestigious award.

The Society has also won the MFG Arts Award four times since 2002 which demonstrates the sterling work the Society does in the region supporting the arts.

The MFG Awards are open to all mortgage lenders large and small and no other mortgage lender in the country can emulate the success Darlington Building Society has shown in accumulating this number of awards in the area of community support, an achievement of which the Society is extremely proud.

In particular this year the Award judges were impressed with the work Society staff have done in supporting Young Enterprise in the region and its sponsorship of the Vibe Awards, organised by Darlington Borough Council, which celebrates the achievements of young people in Darlington.

To further strengthen its community involvement Darlington Building Society has become a member of “Business in the Community”, a not-for-profit organisation of which the Prince of Wales is President, helping businesses focus on responsible business practice. This includes the four pillars of corporate responsibility – Workplace, Marketplace, Environment and Community.

At the recent Darlington Building staff conference, Chris Leech MBE, Corporate Adviser at Business in the Community took the opportunity to formally present the MFG Award for Community Services to James Ramsbotham, Chairman (Designate) of Darlington Building Society.

Chris said, “Business in the Community is delighted to have Darlington Building Society as a member. The Society has clearly demonstrated through its extensive community support over many years that businesses can help transform communities and communities can help transform business.”

He added, “The Society’s consistent responsible business approach has clearly achieved inspirational results within the communities it serves.”

Accepting the Award from Chris, James said, “Darlington Building Society is dedicated to looking after local interests so to receive national acclaim from an independent panel of judges for its community support is extremely gratifying.”

He added, “We look forward to working closely with Business in the Community over the next few years and I am sure they will help inspire us to even greater success in the future.”
