Call for charities to embrace phone recycling

Charities suffering from crippling shortfalls in donations should think more about increasing their effectiveness through recycling, a North East businessman has suggested.

Graham Miller, Director at www.sellmyoldmobilephone.co.uk, said that as families feel the pinch, they are giving less money. The charitable sector now has to think differently to ensure they get what they need for their varied causes.

Mr Miller said: “I was watching Comic Relief and saw all the millions of pounds being donated to Africa. But in many ways that night was the exception that proves the rule.

“British charities are feeling the pinch. People just aren’t giving as they used to. Clearly they believe, quite understandably that in these hard times, charity begins at home. They need to keep a roof over their own heads.”

Donations to charities fell by 20% last year. The public gave £1.7bn less than the year before.

However, the work of many charities can be boosted by donating items which can be re-used in the countries and communities they aim to support, such as mobile phones.

Mr Miller said: “A simple way for households to maintain their sense of helping others is by recycling those old mobile phones and giving that money to charity. Or we suggest more of the larger charities themselves should get involved in this directly.

“Many of these phones will in fact find their way to Africa – which is the fastest growing mobile phone market in the world. Once in circulation, they will immediately become part of the machinery that drives forward any economy.”
