Entrepreneurial siblings brew up coffee shop extension

An authentic Italian coffee shop on Grey Street has doubled its seating capacity as it marks its first anniversary in Newcastle.

9Bar Coffee, which is owned by The Gusto Group, comprising Geordie-Italians Aldo, Cristina and Joseph De Giorgi, was opened in February 2012 as a welcome addition to the coffee culture in the centre of Newcastle, with Italian tapas and an impressive interior featuring bespoke urban artwork.

The Coffee Bar serves coffee exclusively from Square Mile Coffee Roasters, owned by World Barista Champion James Hoffman, and claims to offer some of the best coffee in Newcastle due to the roasting technique of the beans.

Customers can enjoy a selection of Italian tapas which includes Piandina - stone baked hearth bread stuffed with grilled courgettes, roast red peppers, basil pesto and provolone cheese (from £2.50), Arancini - Southern Italian risotto balls in breadcrumbs stuffed with slow cooked beef ragu and pecorini cheese (£2.65), Meatball Sliders - soft poppy seed milk pine nut and raison beef meatball with tomato and basil ragu and cheese fondu (from £2.25) or Spicy Sausage Spuntino with dried chilli with fennel and salt (from £3.25). All dishes are served as tapas or in larger portions.

9Bar Coffee also serves its famous cheese toastie which contains Montgomery cheese, known for its deep, rich, nutty flavour, cooked in sourdough bread in a wood fired oven (£3.95).

Sweet snacks include homemade chocolate cake or fig and walnut cake starting from £2.50.

Joseph de Giorgi, who was responsible for the interior design of 9Bar Coffee shop said: “We wanted to create something really different with 9Bar to offer a quick snack and drink in the centre of town with influences from our home town in Southern Italy. Our vision has become a reality and we’ve now created an extra 20 seats so that customers can enjoy the experience that bit longer.”

9Bar Coffee also offers complimentary WiFi which extends out to the pavement on Grey Street outside of the Theatre Royal, seating an additional 100 people.

The De Giorgi family already has a strong following in the city garnered from the portfolio of popular bars and restaurants they have established including Don Vito’s, Secco, Paradiso, Popolo, Intermezzo and Alvinos. They also own Pasqualino’s Bar and Pizzeria on Market Street.

The coffee shop is open seven days a week from 8am-late from Monday to Saturday, and from 10.30am - late on Sunday
