Sandman Signature Hotel Appoints New General Manager

A LEADING North East hotel has announced the appointment of a new general manager.

Paul Smith, who has worked in some of the world’s top hotels in a career spanning almost 20 years, has taken the helm at the Sandman Signature Hotel in Newcastle, with a brief to expand on its success in the corporate and leisure markets.

The 170-bedroom hotel, at Heber Street, opposite St James’ Park, is the first in the UK to be opened by Canadian hospitality chain the Sandman Hotel Group and was recently voted Large Hotel of the Year at the prestigious North East England Tourism Awards.

Paul, 36, joins the four star venue from The White Swan hotel at Alnwick, where he spent five years as general manager having previously gained experience of all sectors of the industry at a number of prestigious four and five star hotels in England and Ireland.

Additional highlights of his career include positions at the five star Colonial Hilton and Resort at Boston in the US, the renowned, two Michelin-starred Hôtel George V, at Paris, and two years in a senior managerial role with the five star Norwegian Cruise Line at Miami, Florida,

“I’m really excited be joining the Sandman Signature hotel,” said Paul, who is originally from Ireland. “Not only does it enable me to stay in the North East, which is a region I’ve come to love, but I’m looking forward to building on the considerable success the hotel already enjoys.

“As well as expanding our corporate and leisure trade I will be looking to further our links with the local business community and develop our existing, strong relationship with our neighbours at Newcastle United Football Club,” he added.

“I will also be exploring ways in which we can maximise use of our leisure and conference facilities, to offer something truly unique and exciting to our visitors and strengthen our position as a leading city centre venue.”

The Sandman Hotel Group owns more than 45 hotels, resorts and inns across Canada and is now actively looking to expand in the UK.
