Award winning dentist has something to smile about

A North East schoolgirl is all smiles thanks to her dentist, who has just scooped a national award for his work.

Fourteen-year-old Ellie Page’s confidence was shattered when two of her adult front teeth turned out to be misshapen and eventually she stopped smiling in an effort to conceal them from her friends.

Now, after corrective work carried out by leading North East dentist Ken Harris, of Riveredge Cosmetic Dentistry in Sunderland and Newcastle, Ellie, from Ashbrooke, Sunderland, has something to smile about – and she’s not the only one.

As a result of his work on Ellie, Dr Harris was awarded the prize for Best Conservative Composite at the prestigious Aesthetic Dentistry Awards 2013 - formerly the UK Smile Awards - in central London having impressed a panel of judges from the dental and medical professions.

“An outstanding result delivered by someone who knows the technique inside out” was how the judges described the winning entry with some also commenting that they had learned some new techniques themselves from the case report.

The awards were set up in 2008 to reward nationally recognised clinical excellence in cosmetic dentistry and have been described as the industry’s version of the Oscars.

Dr Harris was also placed a very close second in the Restorative Full Mouth category and shortlisted in the categories of Whitening, Restorative Single Arch and Conservative Ceramic Smile – which includes crowns, veneers and tooth bleaching treatments.

He said: “Obviously I’m delighted to have received this award but the real reward was seeing the change in Ellie – she’s gone from being self-conscious to self-confident.”

“I used to hate smiling,” said Ellie, “but I love my teeth now – and all my friends have noticed how much more confident I am.”

This current award is the latest of 19 National Smile Awards won over the last five years by Dr Harris and his Riveredge team, including the overall Smile of the Year Award in 2012.
